I’m Ok, I’m Just Tired is a deeply personal abstract painting created using cracking clay, gels, and pumice paste layered with acrylic paint on stretched cotton canvas. Measuring 90 cm × 90 cm, the work combines tactile texture with soft pastel tones, transforming exhaustion and emotional heaviness into a composition filled with movement, balance, and quiet optimism.
Created shortly after completing his paintings Hay Fever and Joie De Vivre for his exhibition at Supawan restaurant, Samuel approached this work from a very different emotional place. Rather than using his usual saturated palette and energetic paint application, he chose muted pinks, blues, greys, and whites that reflected his physical and mental state at the time. The softer colours create a calmer, more introspective atmosphere while still retaining the layered complexity characteristic of his practice.
Departing from his typical process of flicking and brushing paint across textured surfaces, Samuel instead built the composition through overlapping solid forms and rounded blocks of colour. These organic shapes drift and intersect across the canvas, creating a rhythm that feels both playful and meditative. Beneath the smooth painted forms, cracking textures and pumice surfaces subtly emerge, adding depth and fragility to the work.
Despite being born from a week of exhaustion and back pain, I’m Ok, I’m Just Tired became a transformative piece for Samuel — one that channels vulnerability into something expressive, textured, and unexpectedly joyful. The contrast between the painting’s emotional origin and its uplifting visual presence gives the work a strong sense of honesty and humanity.
The painting is presented within a white stained oak floating frame, designed with a gap between the canvas and frame to reveal the painted edges. The framed dimensions measure 93.5 cm × 93.5 cm × 3.5 cm.
