January Commute is an original abstract mixed media painting by Samuel, created using cracking paste, plaster, pumice paste and gel layered onto canvas to form a richly textured surface.
Working with a moody palette of deep blues, slate greys and black, Samuel evokes the cold, rain-soaked atmosphere of winter mornings in the city. The heavily textured composition is filled with movement and contrast, capturing the restless energy and quiet melancholy of travelling through London during a particularly wet January.
Reflective spray paint and delicate silver leaf accents catch and shift with the light, adding depth and luminosity to the darker tones of the piece. These shimmering details create moments of brightness within the stormy surface, enhancing the painting’s dynamic and atmospheric quality.
Inspired by Samuel’s daily commute during January 2023, January Commute expresses the feeling of navigating grey skies, rain and early morning darkness, while still finding beauty within the urban landscape.
